1984
Five students of the Utrechts Conservatorium (Utrecht Academy of Music) decide to sing between classes:
- counter tenor: Stijn van der Loo (student Music & Education)
- counter tenor/baritone: Ronald Becker (student Choral Conducting)
- tenor: Matthijs Overmars (student Music & Education, subsidiary subject Choral Conducting)
- baritone: Iek de Vos
- bass: Evert Bandringa
Hence, they call themselves: Intermezzo.
Matthijs is the resident arranger and rehearser of the group. They have the singing techniques and stage performance of The King's Singers as their model.
1988
Intermezzo attends the a cappella fest ‘Paradiso' and wins second prize.
1990
Intermezzo is asked by director Shireen Strooker to play part in the theater show “Bouvard en Pécuchet" (based on the book of Gustave Flaubert). They sing songs from Normandy, as interludes.
Shireen, on her part, helps Intermezzo developing their own theater show: “Een Avondvullend Intermezzo" (A Full Evening Interlude).
In January, they sing at TV show ‘Sonja op Zondag' (VARA) and in March they make their appearance at the VPRO show ‘Reiziger in Muziek' (by Han Reiziger) singing “Weerzien" and “Choo Choo Train".
1991
Intermezzo starts touring with the debut show “Een Avondvullend Intermezzo".
The debut album In Fool Color is released.
In December they manifest themselves at the TV show ‘Jansen & Co', singing “Non non rien a changé" with Leoni Jansen and the resident band; “Scarborough Fair" a cappella with Leoni; “U Moved Out" a cappella by themselves and during the credits, together with Leoni, the resident band and theatre group Tender, the song “Non non rien a changé".
